# At the mökki, where the family switches back to Finnish

URL: https://finnishirl.com/situations/mokilla

Situation: At the mökki.

The summer cottage is where the English stops being automatic. It is also where the good part of Finnish social life happens.

## The short version
- A mökki weekend has a shape: arrive, heat the sauna, eat, sauna, swim, sit. Knowing the order matters more than knowing the words.
- You will be given jobs. Taking one - carrying wood, lighting the grill - is how you take part without having to talk.
- The conversation goes quiet for long stretches and then goes unusually deep. Both halves are normal.

## Arriving and being useful
- Voinks auttaa jotenkin? (written: Voinko auttaa jotenkin?) - Can I help with anything?. When: the right first question. Safe for anyone to say.
- Mä haen puita. (written: Minä haen puita.) - I'll get some wood.. When: the reliable job. Casual - fine once you know people.
- Mihin tän laitetaan? (written: Mihin tämä laitetaan?) - Where should this go?. When: holding a bag, standing in a kitchen. Casual - fine once you know people.
- Otan mä. - I'll do it.. When: volunteering. Casual - fine once you know people.

## The day itself
- Kuka lämmittää saunan? - Who is heating the sauna?. When: asked early, every time. Safe for anyone to say.
- Käydään uimassa. - Let's go for a swim.. When: from the laituri, the jetty. Safe for anyone to say.
- Grilli on kuuma. - The grill is hot.. When: the signal that food is happening. Safe for anyone to say.
- Mennään laiturille. - Let's go down to the jetty.. When: where the evening ends up. Safe for anyone to say.

## The evening
- Kippis. - Cheers.. When: eye contact, then drink. Safe for anyone to say.
- Ei oo hassumpaa täällä. - It's not bad here.. When: the highest praise available. Safe for anyone to say.
- Katotaan huomenna. - We'll see tomorrow.. When: about any plan at all. Safe for anyone to say.
- Mä meen nukkumaan. (written: Minä menen nukkumaan.) - I'm going to bed.. When: no explanation needed. Casual - fine once you know people.

## The move that gives you away
Don't: Do not wait to be asked, and do not fill the quiet stretches on the jetty.
Do: Pick up a job, then sit down and let the evening be slow.
Why: Participation at a mökki is physical before it is verbal. Carrying wood buys you more standing than a well-formed sentence does, and it works on day one.

## Same thing, three registers
- Written: Voisinko olla jotenkin avuksi?
- Spoken: Voinks auttaa?
- Casual: Mitä mä teen?
The last one is the most useful of the three. It skips the offer and goes straight to the job, which is where the conversation was heading anyway.

## Arriving
Isäntä: Moi! Tulkaa sisään. Oliks matka pitkä? - Hi! Come in. Was it a long drive?
Sä: Moi! Ei ollu pahakaan. Voinks auttaa jotenkin? - Hi! It wasn't too bad. Can I help with anything?
Isäntä: Jos haet puita saunaan, ni se ois hyvä. - If you get some wood for the sauna, that would be good.
Sä: Joo, mä haen. - Yeah, I'll get it.

## On the jetty, later
Kaveri: Kippis. - Cheers.
Sä: Kippis. - Cheers.
Kaveri: ... - (a long pause, and it is fine)
Kaveri: Ei oo hassumpaa täällä. - It's not bad here.
Sä: Ei todellakaan. - It really is not.

## Questions people ask
**What is a mökki?** A summer cottage, and a much bigger part of Finnish life than "cottage" suggests. There are roughly half a million of them for five and a half million people, and a great deal of the social calendar happens at one.

**What should I bring to a Finnish mökki?** Ask, and then bring it. Usually drinks, something for the grill, and a towel. Turning up with nothing is noticed; turning up with too much is not a problem.

**Is the silence at a mökki awkward?** Only to you, at first. Long comfortable pauses are the normal texture of the evening, and filling them is the thing that would actually be strange.

**Do I have to swim?** No. Everyone will assume you might, nobody will mind if you do not, and no one will bring it up twice.
