mökki
/ˈmøkːi/
A cottage. Specifically the summer place a Finnish family disappears to. Half a million of them, and the rules are all unwritten
Quick answer
Mökki is a cottage, and in practice the small, plain summer place a Finnish family goes to, usually beside a lake.
- Finland counts over half a million of them in a country of 5.5 million people, and they are small: around 49 square metres on average.
- Kesämökki, "summer cottage", is a compound and a synonym in most contexts. It is not the formal version of mökki.
What mökki is
Mökki means a small, plain house. Culturally it means the second place: somewhere modest, usually beside water, often without much in the way of plumbing, that a family goes to in summer and at midsummer in particular.
The scale is the part that surprises people. Statistics Finland's building register counts more than half a million free-time residences against a population of roughly 5.5 million, and they are genuinely small - an average of about 49 square metres in 2020. This is not a country of holiday villas.

How Finns actually use mökki
As a destination and a verb-like activity. Mennään mökille, "let's go to the cottage". Mökkeily is the whole practice of cottage-going.
Mökit are frequently shared family property, so you are usually the guest of several people at once rather than of whoever invited you. And you are generally there without a car of your own, which means you are staying as long as your host is staying.
The conventions are unwritten but they are not mysterious. Bring your own drinks and usually something towards the food. Help with the sauna and the firewood without being asked, and with carrying water if there is no tap. Take your rubbish away with you, since most cottages have no municipal collection. Expect an outhouse, the huussi.
The sauna runs on a turn system, the saunavuoro, and how it is split varies by family. Ask which turn is yours before you walk in.
Midsummer - juhannus - is the peak. Cities visibly empty out, and asking a Finn what they are doing that weekend will usually get you one word.
mökki in a sentence
