työkkäri

/ˈtyøkːæri/

The employment office. Written työvoimatoimisto You will hear it at a counter the state no longer runs

Quick answer

Työkkäri is the employment office: where you register as a jobseeker, where your unemployment benefit is decided, and where you are sent on a course.

  • The word has outlived the institution. Työvoimatoimisto became TE-toimisto, the TE offices shut on 31 December 2024, and everyone still says työkkäri.
  • Employment services belong to municipalities now, in 45 employment areas. The staff behind the desk use the old word too.
  • Expect to do most of it yourself. On the development centre's own spring 2025 count an adviser carried 149 jobseekers against the hundred it calls workable.

What työkkäri means

Työkkäri is the office you deal with when you are looking for work, registered as unemployed, or being sent on a course. Jobseeker registration, the statements that decide your unemployment benefit, training, pay subsidies: that desk. It is also the only name in this corner of Finnish administration that has never needed updating.

The word is a clipping. Työvoimatoimisto gets cut back to its first syllable and picks up the ending spoken Finnish hands to the places people deal with often.

Nobody updated it when the institution changed. The offices were renamed TE-toimisto, short for työ- ja elinkeinotoimisto, and then closed altogether at the end of 2024. The slang outlived both.

Ordinary opener. Nobody will put you right about the word.

  2. Them Joo, työllisyyspalvelut. Mitä asia koskee?

Yes, employment services. What's it about?

The official name arrives inside the answer. Nobody is correcting you.

  3. You Mun työnhaku on katkennu.

    My jobseeker registration has lapsed.

  4. Them Katotaan. Sanoksä henkilötunnuksen?

How Finns actually use työkkäri

As the name of a place you go to or ring: työkkärissä, työkkäristä, työkkäriin. It takes ordinary case endings like any other noun.

As the name of the decision-maker, not just the building. Työkkäri sano ei means a person there refused something.

Staff use it about their own workplace. Nobody will correct you, and nobody is being ironic when they say it.

The service itself is mostly online now. Registration, job applications and the profile everyone has to keep up all live on Työmarkkinatori. You may never enter the building.

Going to the työkkäri, and hearing from it

  • Mun pitää käydä työkkärissä ens viikolla. I have to go to the employment office next week. Written Minun pitää käydä työvoimatoimistossa ensi viikolla. The inessive. It takes ordinary case endings like any other noun.
  • Työkkäristä soitettiin eilen. The employment office rang yesterday. The elative, and the passive, because who rang is not the point.
työkkäri - an older man in a work jacket at a desk while a young adviser turns her monitor round to show him something, snow on the trees outside
Almost all of it happens online now. The chairs are still there anyway.

What comes through the työkkäri, and where it happens now

  • Toi kurssi tuli työkkärin kautta. That course came through the employment office. The genitive. Courses, subsidies and training all arrive this way.
  • Ilmottauduin työnhakijaks netissä. I registered as a jobseeker online. Where it actually happens now. You may never enter the building at all.

työvoimatoimisto on paper, työkkäri out loud

Kirjakieli · written työvoimatoimisto
Puhekieli · spoken työkkäri

One of the written-and-spoken pairs - every word on this site that exists in both forms is in that table, beside the change between them.

The same sentence, both ways
What you will hear What the book writes
Mun pitää käydä työkkärissä ens viikolla. Minun pitää käydä työvoimatoimistossa ensi viikolla.

Why työvoimatoimisto became työkkäri

Työvoimatoimisto is the word the slang was cut from, and it is the former written name. Forms, letters and legislation used it for decades. Työkkäri is what is said, inside the building as well as outside it.

Neither form is wrong and neither is old-fashioned. One is four syllables shorter, and the short one is what you will hear.

What has moved is the institution underneath, so the written name today belongs to your own employment area: usually työllisyyspalvelut with a municipality in front of it. This is the shape the whole site is about. You will hear one word at the counter and the answer will come back carrying a different one, and neither party is correcting the other.

The rule behind työkkäri

The change in työkkäri is not a one-off. It is one of the regular changes between written and spoken Finnish, and it applies well beyond this word.

Written Spoken What changed
Writtentyövoimatoimisto Spokentyökkäri What changedCut back to the first syllable and given a casual ending. The offices people deal with often are the ones that get short names.
Writtensosiaalitoimisto Spokensossu What changedSame cut, a different ending, and the same fate: those offices went to the wellbeing services counties in 2023 and the word stayed. Sossu also carries a sting that työkkäri does not.
Writtenammattikoulu Spokenamis What changed-is is the third ending and the most productive of the three: kirppis for kirpputori, futis for jalkapallo, amis for ammattikoulu.
WrittenKansaneläkelaitos SpokenKela What changedWent the whole way: the short form is now the agency's official name. Not every clipping stays slang.

työkkäri in a conversation

Ooksä käyny työkkärissä?
En. Mä hoidin sen netissä.
Eiks se oo nykyään kunnalla?
On. Samat lomakkeet silti.
Sanotaaks sitä silti työkkäriks?
Sanotaan. Ei kukaan sano sitä mitenkään muuten.

The mistake everyone makes with työkkäri

Työkkäri belongs in speech. On a form, in an email to an official, or in a benefit application, use the name printed on the letter you were sent.

Assuming the building nearest you is still open. Services moved to 45 municipal employment areas in 2025, and the local arrangement is a municipal one now.

Mixing it up with Kela. The employment authority decides whether you count as a jobseeker; Kela or your unemployment fund pays the money.

Waiting for a letter. Registration lapses if you miss a step, and the reminders arrive in the online service rather than on paper.

työkkäri as a decision, and the name that outlived it

  • Työkkäri sano ei, mä valitan päätöksestä. The employment office said no, I'm appealing the decision. The name of a decision-maker, not only of a building.
  • Työkkäri on nykyään kunnan, mut nimi ei vaihtunu. The employment office belongs to the municipality now, but the name didn't change. The offices closed at the end of 2024. The slang outlived the institution.

Questions people ask about työkkäri

What does työkkäri mean?

The employment office. It is the everyday spoken name for what forms call työvoimatoimisto, and it is what Finns say regardless of what the sign outside currently reads.

Is työkkäri rude?

No. It is casual, not disrespectful, and the staff use it about their own workplace. It is simply not a word to write on anything official.

What is the employment office called now?

Employment services run by your municipality, usually työllisyyspalvelut with the name of the municipality or employment area attached. The old TE offices closed on 31 December 2024.

Do I still have to go to an office?

Mostly not. Registration, job applications and the profile you are required to keep up all run through Työmarkkinatori, and a great deal of the process never involves a building at all.

Where do I register as a jobseeker?

Online, through Työmarkkinatori. The service survived the reform unchanged. Registration must be live before the days you are claiming for, so do it on the day your work ends and not once you are already out of work.

Is it the same as Kela?

No. The employment authority handles your jobseeker status and the statements about it; Kela or an unemployment fund handles the payment.

Is työkkäri correct Finnish?

Yes. Työkkäri is the spoken form; työvoimatoimisto is the written one. Both are standard Finnish - they belong to different registers, and neither is a degraded version of the other.

Don’t confuse työkkäri with these

Not this Why it matters
Kela The employment authority decides whether you are registered as a jobseeker. Kela or your unemployment fund pays on the back of that decision.
työpaikka That is a job or a workplace. Työkkäri is the office you go to when you have not got one.
