vuoronumero
/ˈvuoroˌnumero/
A queue ticket - the numbered slip you take and wait for. Take a number, sit down, say nothing
Quick answer
A vuoronumero is a numbered ticket you take on arrival and wait for on a screen.
- Pharmacies, health centres, Kela and Vero service points all use them, and there is no physical queue to join.
- Take one immediately. Standing near the counter without a number achieves nothing.
What vuoronumero means
The vuoronumero is your place in the queue, held by a slip of paper instead of by your body. The dispenser is by the door and the display is above the counters.
The system exists so that nobody has to negotiate position, watch anyone else, or stand close to a stranger. It suits the country exactly.
How Finns actually use vuoronumero
Take a ticket, sit down, watch the screen. When your number appears with a counter number, go to that counter.
The venues have narrowed. Standalone post offices have largely gone, their counters absorbed into kiosks and supermarkets that use an ordinary queue, and bank branches are now mostly appointment-only.
Some dispensers ask what you are there for and issue a different letter-and-number series for each service, so read before you press.
Odottaa vuoroaan is to wait your turn. Vuoro is the same word as in saunavuoro.
Increasingly you book online first and the ticket only confirms you have arrived.
Taking a vuoronumero, and comparing them
- Ota vuoronumero tuolta. Take a queue ticket from over there. What somebody will say to you if you stand at the counter without one.
- Mikä numero sulla on? What number have you got? Comparing slips, which is about as much as gets said in the room.

Waiting for your vuoronumero, and the announcement
- Mun vuoro on kohta. It's nearly my turn. Vuoro on its own. The same word as in saunavuoro.
- Vuoronumero 142, tiskille kolme. Number 142, to counter three. The announcement, and the only thing anybody in the room is listening for.
What happens instead of vuoronumero
Nobody fills this gap
You take a ticket, sit down and wait. Nobody speaks to the person beside them, nobody comments on how long it is taking, and nobody looks up when the display beeps for someone else.
The number has already settled the only question a queue raises, which is who goes next. There is nothing left to negotiate, so there is nothing to say.
Leaving an empty seat between you and the next person is normal here and reads as courtesy.
vuoronumero in a conversation
The mistake everyone makes with vuoronumero
Not taking a ticket. This is the classic newcomer error - you can wait twenty minutes without ever being in the queue at all.
Standing at the counter to ask a quick question. The number is the queue and there is no shortcut around it.
Taking the wrong series. If the machine offers options, the first button is not always the right one.
Arriving without a vuoronumero, and choosing the right one
- Mä en ottanu numeroo. Oonks mä jonossa? I didn't take a number. Am I in the queue? The newcomer's question, asked after twenty minutes. The answer is no.
- Kone kysyy ensin, mitä asiaa. The machine asks first what you're here for. Where the ticket series gets chosen, and where a wrong button costs you the wait.
Questions people ask about vuoronumero
What is a vuoronumero?
A numbered queue ticket. You take one on arrival and wait for your number to appear on a screen.
Where do I need one?
Pharmacies, health centres, and Kela and Vero service points. Post office counters have moved into shops that use ordinary queues, and banks are now largely appointment-only.
What happens if I don't take one?
You wait without being in the queue. This is the most common mistake a newcomer makes in a Finnish waiting room.
Why doesn't anyone queue in a line?
Because the ticket holds your place. It removes any need to stand close to strangers or watch who arrived first.
Is it rude to talk in the waiting room?
Not rude, but unusual. Silence is the norm and nobody will think anything of yours.
