ruska
/ˈruskɑ/
The autumn colour season, when the leaves turn. Book it a week late and you are looking at bare branches
Quick answer
Ruska is the autumn colour season: the fortnight in any one place when the leaves have turned and not yet fallen. Autumn in general is syksy.
- Finns book annual leave for it. Ruskaloma is a ruska holiday and ruskaretki a ruska trip, and Lapland fills up for the fortnight the colour lasts.
- It moves. Ruska reaches the far north in early September and the south around early October, so the season gets chased southwards.
What ruska is
Ruska names a window, not a colour. In any one place it lasts roughly two weeks, and the difference between arriving on time and a week late is full colour against bare branches.
In Lapland the effect is different in kind. Below the treeline the birches turn yellow, but on the fells the low vegetation - the dwarf birch, the blueberry and crowberry scrub, the lichen - turns red and orange at the same time, so entire hillsides change at once rather than a canopy above your head. That is the ruska people travel for.
The word sits in the same category as juhannus and vappu: a fixed point in the Finnish year that structures when people take time off.
ruska at a glance
How Finns actually use ruska
As a reason for absence that needs no explaining. A colleague away for ruska is not making an excuse, and ruskaloma is a normal word on a holiday form.
Ruskaretki is a ruska trip, ruska-aika the season itself, and ruskavaellus a ruska hike - the last of which fills the Lapland trails in the second and third weeks of September.
Alongside it runs marjastus and sienestys, berry-picking and mushrooming, which are legal on land you do not own under jokamiehenoikeudet, now officially called jokaisenoikeudet. For many families the ruska trip and the berry trip are the same trip.
The season is tracked publicly. Metsähallitus, the state land agency, publishes where the colour has reached, and people plan around it the way others plan around a forecast.
When ruska is at its best, and going to see it
- Ruska on parhaimmillaan ens viikolla. The colours will be at their best next week. A window of about two weeks, and a week either way decides what you see.
- Me lähetään ruskaretkelle Lappiin. We're going on a ruska trip to Lapland. The allative on the trip. Lapland is where the fells turn as well as the trees.

ruska in the south, and on a holiday form
- Ruska alkaa jo olla ohi täällä. The colours are nearly over here. Said in the south in October, about a thing the north finished weeks ago.
- Mä otin ruskaloman syyskuun puolessavälissä. I took my ruska leave in the middle of September. A normal word on a holiday form, and a reason nobody asks about.

The mistake everyone makes with ruska
Thinking it means autumn. Syksy is autumn and runs for months. Ruska is two weeks.
Assuming it only happens in Lapland. It happens everywhere in the country - Lapland's is the version that fills hotels, because the fells turn as well as the trees.
Booking on the calendar rather than on the colour. It moves with the year and with latitude, and a week either way decides what you see.

Tracking ruska, and what it is not
- Metsähallitus seuraa missä ruska on menossa. Metsähallitus tracks where the colour has got to. People plan around it the way others plan around a forecast.
- Syksy kestää kuukausia, ruska kaks viikkoo. Autumn lasts months, ruska lasts two weeks. The distinction the word depends on. Syksy is the season, ruska is the window inside it.
Questions people ask about ruska
What does ruska mean?
The autumn colour season - the short window when the leaves have turned and not yet fallen. It lasts about two weeks in any one place.
Is ruska the same as autumn?
No. Autumn is syksy and runs for months. Ruska is the colour window inside it.
When does ruska happen?
It moves north to south: early September in the far north, around early October in the south. Metsähallitus publishes where the colour has reached.
Why is Lapland's ruska the famous one?
Because the fell vegetation turns as well as the trees. Below the treeline you get yellow birches; on the fells the dwarf birch and berry scrub turn red and orange, so whole hillsides change at once.
What is a ruskaloma?
A holiday taken to see the autumn colours. It is an ordinary reason to book leave, and Lapland's accommodation fills for it.
Can I pick berries while I am there?
Yes. Berry-picking and mushrooming on land you do not own are covered by jokamiehenoikeudet, and for many families the ruska trip and the berry trip are the same trip.
Is ruska a bad word?
Safe. Mistaking it for the whole of autumn is the common slip.
